Old Navy
The term old navy could have a lot of meanings, it could just mean anything to do with the "old navy" i.e. referring to old ships, sailors etc. It
could also refer to the modern line of clothes stores that was started in the 1990's
Opened in 1994 as a value chain, Old Navy stores opened its first store in Colma, Ca. Within the first year of existence, Old Navy opened over 50 stores. As
of mid 2005, Old Navy has more than 910 stores. Many of the stores are located in the USA as well as in Canada, the largest of which is on State Street in
Chicago, Illinois.
The name "Old Navy" was chosen because originally the stores were supposed to imitate the look and feel of a traditional military
surplus store. While this motif was quickly dropped, many stores retain a warehouse-like/urban decor and the name stuck.
The online store began
operations in 2000.
In 1999, Old Navy expanded its franchise to 6 locations in Puerto Rico. In 2001, Old Navy opened 12 stores in the Greater Toronto
Area, Canada. Also, in 2004, 7 stores were opened in the province of Quebec (including 6 in the Montreal Area). Every year, Old Navy releases $5 American,
Canadian, and Puerto Rican flag t-shirts with the year printed just below the flag. see also Navy
